Developing Intercultural Understanding
Learning a modern foreign language at primary level provides an excellent opportunity to develop children’s intercultural understanding and also it increases their appreciation of their own & other cultures. Using authentic resources such as photographs, stories, music and art as props in lessons can be motivating and bring the foreign language alive for the children. Learning about traditional foods, festivals and fashion of the foreign country for example can not only raise awareness of cultural diversity.
Have a look at the pictures of the intercultural activities we have done! We have been looking at paintings of Spanish painters such as Picasso, Dali and Sorolla. We have also cooked traditional Spanish food, danced flamenco and sang traditional songs. We have also researched about Spanish speaking countries and learnt about their cultures and traditions.
